I have been creating a bunch of home brew ideas for a fantasy setting campaign over the past several years. There's part of me that wants to run the game with the ideas and then there is a part of me that would like to be able to flesh out the ideas into a larger project to help generate revenue.
Unfortunately, I don't have the time to dedicate myself to creating most of these ideas into a revenue source, so I am going to work on posting the ideas here for my readers. We are starting here and I hope to be able to expand this into a regular series of posts.
The basis for this idea is a system of government know as a theocracy.
In a fantasy setting like D&D, I think this could really hold some weight with the number of various deities in the setting.
The concept is simple enough: A region of land (city, county, country, etc) that is governed by a single religion. You can make is a lenient or as strict as you would like, but here are the core ideas I had in mind when I first thought of this:
- Clerics, Paladins and people who worship other deities outside of the religion of the area are tolerated, but frowned upon.
- Worship and Devine magic from those outside of the recognized religion of the area is strictly forbidden and the penalty for using outlawed Devine magic is severe. The penalties for simple worship without the casting of Devine magic is usually punishable by jailtime, public humiliation and exile or banishment from the area.
- The high priests of the theocracy have developed a ritual to sever the Devine connection of those who are found guilty of breaking the laws of casting Devine magic from outside of the accepted religion.
